First meeting for the new term, 2011-2012, exciting, expectant, surprises!

It was exciting, because it was the first.

Started punctually at 7.30 pm and we are proud of maintaining the habit.

Expectant, because our newly elected President, Ahmad Zakie was going to reveal the plans (Club Success Plan) he had for the club.

Surprises - it was the AG's visit! Let me tell you - we are only 10 in numbers (increased by 1 - Selvarani, who had taken a break for few months, rejoined this evening), but we have 3 district oficers this term:

As there were no speeches, we had long version of the Table Topics, based on "Speak Off the Cuff" from the advanced manual, "Specialty Speeches". The speech contents ranged from "How to take better photographs" (by Sandy Tan) to Lucky's "Marriages are made in heaven, but arranged in Bombay"!

After the meeting, we went through the Club Success Plan with the Area Gov.

Yesterday, at the Area G1 International Speech & Table Topics Contest held at the Bangsar Toastmasters Club premise, we witnessed the participation of ten contestants from three clubs, i.e. KL Advanced, Bangsar and Money Mastery.

Only KL Advanced had one representative for each of the contests - the other clubs had two representatives - but when the results were announced, both contestants from KL Advanced swept the honours! Congratulatiosn to Victor Ong for winning the International Speech contest and Philip Wong for achieving the same in the Table Topics contest. In fact, both these contestants performed exceptionally well, and deserved the accolades. They certainly did KL Advanced Toastmasters Club proud!

Special thanks to the small band of supporters who came to cheer our contestants on.

Meeting Review : Monday, 15th November, 2010.

Toastmaster of the Evening: VPE, Lorna Fisher, ACS, CL.

All members and guests present at this meeting had a unique session of Toastmasters’ meeting.

The meeting started routinely with the President’s address, the Toastmaster of the Evening conducting the introduction of members and guests and role players.

The first unique feature of the evening’s meeting was poetry reading, conducted by our ‘poet’, Lorna Fisher, ACS, CL. Each verse of the poem, ‘Be Glad Your Nose Is On Your Face’, was read by each member and guests in a ‘round-table’ fashion, with the poet reading the first verse.

The usual Table Topic session was conducted by our President Rohijas, DTM, centering on the word of the day, ‘key’. We learnt about the different meanings and uses of keys – our house keys, security locks and keys for our homes and the unusual meaning of ‘key’ as a bandanna. Altogether there four speakers : Alan Tan, TM, Cheong Cheng Mui, Ahmad Zaierif, Dalbir Singh, CC and the best table topic speaker was a guest, Cheong Cheng Mui.

The evening was further enlivened by the Project speakers. Victor Ong’s speech was somber and timely as a reminder of road safety during these festive seasons at end of year; Rohijas, DTM, in his entertaining speech told us the story of Billy The Kid to make us reflect on the turning points in our lives. Last, but not least, in her unique presentation of her speech, ‘As Easy As 1, 2, 3’ (from ‘Speaking To Inform’), Lorna Fisher, ACS, CL, had all of us waltzing five minutes of her speech time away! Wished we could waltz all night.

Toastmaster of the Evening: VP-PR, Victor Ong, ACG, CL

This meeting was routinely called to order but thereafter the speakers in both the Table Topic Session and the Project speech made it extraordinary.

Poetry can serve as an invocation and the poem, ‘Slow Dance’, read by Nini Yeoh, CC, CL, was an invocation. It was a call to all of us to slow down and remember that life is not a race but a journey to be savored.

Our Table Topic Master, Rohijas, DTM, gave some serious and light topics to the speakers. First, Lucky, ATMB, ALS, could not find any adversity in his neighbourhood of Bangsar; instead, Bangsar was the ‘in-place’ to be, the place where things happen, a popular ‘night-life’ place. Sameet, as a Kelantanese, was to console the Negri Sembilan football team in losing their match to their rivals, Kelantan; certainly, a difficult task! Kim, TM, had to explain adversity to a small child, who did not understand life as such yet; again, a daunting task. What if someone did not answer his handphone, could one say he was dead? “Certainly not” was the answer given by Ahmad Zaierif, who pointed that there were other means of electronic communications available and one would have to take a break from answering phones. Nini Yeoh, CC, CL, spoke on how tragedies affected her, how it would be difficult to end natural disasters and how man-made tragedies could be avoided.

The Table Topic Session speakers did certainly provide interesting insight and views on the topics given to them.

Best Table Topic Speaker: Ahmad Zaierif

Two new Toastmasters, Kim Lee Tchimi and Selvarani, presented their first Project speech, ‘The Ice Breaker’. Kim’s speech title, ‘Adversities – Justice of Life’ was about the contrasting life-style of her rich friend and others like herself. She presented a poem, written by herself, in her speech which made the speech rather unusual. Selvarani, TM, told about herself – her career as an insurance agent, her personal life and her reason for joining a Toastmaster Club was to enhance her self-confidence and improve her command of English.

Meeting Review: Monday, 18, October, 2010

Monday, 18 October, 2010 was a new day, a new beginning and a new home for the Club: KL Advanced now meets in KL Sentral.

Thank you to Dalbir Singh, C.C., for getting our Club a new home, one that shall be permanent.

We devoted our Table-Topic session to a session of reminiscence of our Immediate Past President, Bill Sim, ACG, CL, who passed away on Wednesday, 6 October, 2010. It was a moving tribute to Bill Sim, whom we remember as a warm-hearted, ever smiling and wonderful man. He cared about each of us and the Club. He introduced Selvarani to the Club. He did a lot for KL Advanced. Each of us who had known him will always remember but surely miss him. Rest in peace, Bill.

The evening continued with zest and enthusiasm. Each of the three speakers gave us a lot to think about, starting with Gail’s speech on “Body Talk”. Yes, our body talked; it is just that we seldom pay attention to the way our body talks or the way our body talks can be to our advantage. Our entertaining speech was from Monica Jo, “Blessing In Disguise”. She spoke about her trepidation (loss of realizing her dreams) on discovering her pregnancy, her acceptance and joy when she realized that the child was a blessing and her dreams could still be fulfilled. Then Lorna Fisher did an excerpt from the book, “The Art of Conversation”, that gave us an insight into how much electronic communication has made an impact on our lives, diminishing the real art of conversation and inter-action between people.

September 20 Meeting Review

On September 20, 2010, at the Prasarana office on the twentieth floor of Tower B, Wisma UOA in Bangsar, members and guests of the KL Advanced Toastmasters Club trooped in with much excitement for our regular Monday meeting. There was a buzz of excitement because we knew that we had a special guest who flew in all the way from the United Kingdom (Wales, to be precise). Evelynne Fisher was this guest and she generously recited three poems that kept all of us glued to our seats and dare I say it, sufficiently mesmerized at the beautiful arrangement of rhyming sentences that enthralled, entertained and engaged us!. We were indeed privileged to be able to listen to Lorna Fisher’s mom.

This special treat aside, we had our usual prescription of Table Topics and assignment speeches as well as the mandatory evaluations. Monica was voted the Best Speaker and Lucky the Best Evaluator. It was nice to have Sandrasegaran back in our fold and on this said evening, he was the Toastmaster. We also saw the presence of Hj Naburi and Johnny Yong, as well as Amelia and Kim and her mother, Rosemary. Not forgetting too that Monica Jo and Teddy Lesmana from Jakarta-based Toastmasters Clubs – this is their second time here – were in attendance. Everybody who was there contributed to making this evening an enjoyable affair that will stay in our memories for a long while yet.

Meeting Review on September 06, 2010

Monday’s meeting saw only 7 members turning up – and I half-expected it to be a solemn and dreary meeting. Okay, part of this gloomy expectation was also because I had endured a 2-hour car ride to the meeting venue, and I was plainly jaded. But things took a sudden turn for the better when I was tasked to be the Toastmaster-of-the-Evening! And then we had five guests who turned up too – and that makes a merry crowd of Toastmasters and guests (for your info, our guest list included 2 non-Toastmasters and 3 visiting Toastmasters).

And as soon as the meeting was convened by Gail, our lovable Sergeant-at-Arms, the meeting promptly went into first gear when Rohijas Sharif, DTM gave his presidential address. Without so much as to pause, we straightaway went into second gear and soon cruising as Lorna began her thought-provoking invocation. We then picked up speed in third gear when Lorna again relentlessly drove us on with interesting Table Topics, followed by a useful session of charm-induced evaluations conducted by Rohijas. We came to a short stop for ten minutes in order that we could refresh ourselves, before we sped off again, this time, with two prepared speeches. The first was by our newbie Toastmaster, Jordan who boldly unveiled his engaging life before us with his Ice Breaker speech, aptly titled ‘A story about me”. His lead evaluator was the affable Arvind who was both supportive and encouraging. This was accompanied by a very animated Victor Ong who did a humorous speech titled “Unlucky in Love”. The second speaker’s lead evaluator was Lucky, who gave his frank feedback in his usual inimitable style. And then of course, we had the technical evaluations too. All in all, it was a fabulous meeting because there was much sharing and caring!

By the way, our three Toastmasters came from afar – Amelia Gan was the nearest – she actually came from Bukit Jalil and she’s a member of AFC Toastmasters Club. The other two were a lovely Indonesian couple, Monica and Teddy – although they come from two different Jakarta-based Toastmasters clubs, i.e. SCBD Toastmasters Club and Jakarta Motivators Toastmasters Club.

Indeed, this meeting is akin to a car journey that brings us to a landscape of fluent speaking and useful evaluations, a destination that rewards us with a meaningful learning experience.

For those of you who have missed this meeting – well, what can I say? Except, maybe, you can promise yourself that you will come to our next meeting on September 20! C’mon, and hitch a ride with us and be a part of this Toastmastering experience!

KL Advanced Toastmasters Club Installation Nite

August 16, 2010 was a Monday to be remembered because this day was when we celebrated the KL Advanced Toastmasters Club's Installation Night! We discharged the 2008-2009 Exco and then we installed the new Exco 2010-2011. The installation ceremony was conducted with solemn dignity by Area G1 Governor, Haji Naburi. In addition to this formal segment, we - members and friends - gathered here to pa-r-t-y!

The venue was the very elegant Pedro's Place at Desa Sri Hartamas, KL. There were the delicious food, the delectable humor and the delightful songs to make this an evening that was unforgettable! The photos tell the story of a dynamite evening!

And Lorna Fisher and Sandrasegaran won the Best Costume awards, while the Humorist Award went to the very funny Foong Weng Tuck of D'Utama Advanced Toastmasters Club. The other D'Utama Advanced member who came was Chan Siew Peng. Other toastmasters that lent support included Vasugi from MAS Melor; Helen Quat from Metro; Choi San from Premier Advanced, and Hj Naburi from Money Mastery. Non-toastmaster guests included Lee Tchumi, Rosalind, Edrickson Sadom and Michael Pineda. All in all, those who attended had lots of fun and good cheer!

Yesterday (Monday, August 02, 2010), we had our regular KL Advanced Toastmasters meeting, and as usual, we had a very productive and better still, enjoyable meeting. What was extra-special was that we have two reasons to be particularly grateful, and thereby giving us cause to celebrate!

First, hearty congratulations to our member Dalbir Singh on the completion of his Competent Communicator Manual. Finally. We look forward to hearing and seeing more...

Second, we welcome Jordan (Lau Chern Loong), who signed up as our latest member. In fact, he showed his mettle by leaping into Table Topics last night. Wow, such enthusiasm! We can't wait to hear his Ice-breaker speech next month...

Meeting Review: Monday, July 19, 2010

It was a good meeting that we had on this Monday. For one, Bill Sim (IPP) made an appearance, and he was thrusted into the role of the Toastmaster-of-the-Evening. With Bill in the driver's seat, the meeting was going to be a real blast!

The President was as always, inspiring and positive energies continued to flow when Lorna Fisher (our VP Education) recited a poem. I liked the poem and I am going to reproduce it in its entirety in this blog. In no time, we heard three prepared speeches - starting off with Victor Ong, followed by Gail Ghouse, and finally Lite Mendros. The first two did their CC speech # 3 and Lite did CC speech # 4 - all of them acquiting themselves very well. Needless to say, Victor Ong was voted the Best Speaker - well, somebody's got to poll the highest number of votes, so it might as well be me!

As is our practise, we commenced evaluations immediately after every speech. Lucky MA, Lorna and Bill were the lead evaluators respectively, and this was accompanied by Open Evaluations, and then rebuttals by the speakers themselves. Bill was voted the Best Evaluator.

And because our time-management was excellent - we had an impromptu Table Topics session. Also because Sandra wasn't able to make it to the meeting to do his CC speech # 3 due to last-minute work commitments. The Table Topics Master was Lorna and the Table Topics Evaluator was Rohijas. And surprise, surprise, Phang, a first-time guest who claimed she is not an accomplished speaker, actually won the Best Table Topics speaker award.

Area G1 Governor who doubled up as the General Evaluator, Hj. Naburi Idin was full of praise for our meeting, insisting that he had much to learn from KL Advanced Toastmasters Club. Shucks, he's nice and he spoke in all honesty.

Overall, it was a great meeting and I am sure all of us who were there did enjoy it in a most satisfying manner! See you again at our next meeting on August 02, 2010!

On Saturday (July 10), Nini Yeoh and Victor Ong attended the Division B TLI training at Taylor's University College lakeside campus. The usual stuff but here's the clincher! Meeting Review: Monday, July 05, 2010

Attendance by members (10/19) and guests (8) was very heartening.

The President opened this first meeting of the term 2010-2011. Members and guests introduced themselves.

Invocation by Mandy Ong, ACG CL, was an inspirational challenge to the Club to fly higher this year to achieve President's Distinguished Club award.

The TME introduced a brief history Toastmasters International and its mission for the benefit of the guests.

Victor Ong, ACG, CL, the TTM, capitalized on the World Cup fever to come up with a creative session. He gave each speaker two words that they must use in their speech. Altogether, five speakers, Suganatha, Hakim, Lora, Jen, Nuelita, took part in the session. They spoke in a confident manner on the words given, covering football, basketball (NBA), committees, cats, bad habits they would like to kick and the reasons why they attended this particular Toastmasters’ meeting. It must be specially mentioned that four out of five speakers were guests and one of them, Jen, was voted the Best Table Topic Speaker.

Gail, TM, did a brilliant presentation of her speech, “The Good Olde Days of Yore”, giving a three-dimensional view of the old and the new: posted mail and emails, old –ledger books and computerized accounting, art of conversation and text messages. Her message was to not “forget important things” and to “embrace them”.

“Men’s Fear” was certainly an interesting speech by Victor Ong, ACG, CL. He informed the audience the common fears faced by men in striking up conversation or relationship with the opposite sex, women. He then gave a solution, and that is, to join Toastmasters to improve one’s speaking skills, gain self-confidence and be successful in impressing the ladies.

Dalbir’s speech, “I’m Sorry”, was to persuade the audience to go beyond the stage of saying, “I’m sorry”. He told us to move further into the stages of admitting our mistakes and making amends.

The meeting was definitely a brilliant one, that lived up to its theme of “Rise and Shine.”

Our next meeting is on Mon. 19 July, 2010. All members are encouraged to attend.

Maiden 2010-2011 Meeting

Today was our first meeting of the new 2010-2011 term! We had ten members turning up, and together with 8 guests – 6 of whom were non-Toastmasters – we concluded a highly energized meeting that was genuinely satisfying and enjoyable! Personally, I believe the speeches were of a high quality, the evaluations were just as exemplary, the role-players first-class, and the audience attentive and riveting. The adjectives used may be superlative but we were deserving! What more can we ask of a Toastmasters meeting?

Stage fright Is Good and Makes You Better Looking Too!

Before you learn how to deliver your lines, it is important to be ready to deliver your lines. Stage fright is a phenomenon that you must learn to control. Actually, stage fright isn't the most accurate term for the nervousness that occurs when considering a speaking engagement. In fact, most of the fear occurs before you step on-stage. Once you're up there, it usually goes away. Try to think of stage fright in a positive way. Fear is your friend. It makes your reflexes sharper. It heightens your energy, adds a sparkle to your eye, and color to your cheeks. When you are nervous about speaking you are more conscious of your posture and breathing. With all those good side effects you will actually look healthier and more physically attractive.

Many of the top performers in the world get stage fright so you are in good company. Stage fright may come and go or diminish, but it usually does not vanish permanently. You must concentrate on getting the feeling out in the open, into perspective and under control.

Remember Nobody ever died from stage fright. But, according to surveys, many people would rather die than give a speech. If that applies to you, try out some of the strategies in this section to help get yourself under control. Realize that you may never overcome stage fright, but you can learn to control it, and use it to your advantage.

Symptoms of Stage fright

Dry mouth.
Tight throat.
Sweaty hands.
Cold hands.
Shaky hands.
Nausea.
Fast pulse.
Shaky knees.
Trembling lips.

Any out-of-the-ordinary outward or inward feeling or manifestation of a feeling occurring before, or during, the beginning of a presentation.
(Wow! What a dry mouthful!).

Here are some easy to implement strategies for reducing your stage fright. Not everyone reacts the same and there is no universal fix. Don't try to use all these fixes at once. Pick out items from this list and try them out until you find the right combination for you.

Visualization strategies that can be used anytime

Concentrate on how good you are.

Pretend you are just chatting with a group of friends.

Close your eyes and imagine the audience listening, laughing, and applauding.

Remember happy moments from your past.

Think about your love for and desire to help the audience.

Picture the audience in their underwear.

Strategies in advance of program

Be extremely well prepared.

Join or start a Toastmasters club for extra practice

Get individual or group presentation skills coaching.

Listen to music.

Read a poem.

Anticipate hard and easy questions.

Organize.

Absolutely memorize your opening statement so you can recite it on autopilot if you have to.

Practice, practice, practice. Especially practice bits so you can spit out a few minutes of your program no matter how nervous you are.

Get in shape. I don't know why it helps stage fright, but it does.

Strategies just before the program

Remember Stage fright usually goes away after you start. The tricky time is before you start.

Be in the room at least an hour early if possible to triple check everything. You can also schmooze with participants arriving early.

Notice and think about things around you.

Concentrate on searching for current and immediate things that are happening at the event that you can mention during your talk (especially in the opening).

Get into conversation with people near you. Be very intent on what they are saying.

Yawn to relax your throat.

Doodle.

Draw sketches of a new car you would like to have.

Look at your notes.

Put pictures of your kids/grandkids, dog, etc., in your notes.

Build a cushion of time in the day so you are not rushed but not too much time. You don't want to have extra time to worry.

If your legs are trembling, lean on a table, sit down, or shift your legs.

Take a quick walk.

Take quick drinks of tepid water.

Double check your A/V equipment.

Don't drink alcohol or coffee or tea with caffeine.

Concentrate on your ideas.

Hide notes around the stage area so you know you have a backup if you happen to draw a blank.

Concentrate on your audience.

Listen to music.

Read a poem.

Do isometrics that tighten and release muscles.

Shake hands and smile with attendees before the program.

Say something to someone to make sure your voice is ready to go.

Go somewhere private and warm up your voice, muscles, etc.

Use eye contact.

Go to a mirror and check out how you look.

Breathe deeply, evenly, and slowly for several minutes.

Don't eat if you don't want to and never take tranquilizers or other such drugs. You may think you will do better, but you will probably do worse and not know it.

Strategies when the program begins

If legs are trembling, lean on lectern /table or shift legs or move.

Try not to hold the microphone by hand in the first minute.

Don't hold notes. The audience can see them shake. Use three-by-five cards instead.

Take quick drinks of tepid water.

Use eye contact. It will make you feel less isolated.

Look at the friendliest faces in the audience.

Joke about your nervousness. "What's the right wine to go with fingernails?"

Remember nervousness doesn't show one-tenth as much as it feels.

Before each presentation make a short list of the items you think will make you feel better. Don't be afraid to experiment with different combinations. You never know which ones will work best until you try. Rewrite them on a separate sheet and keep the sheet with you at all times so you can refer to it quickly when the need arises.

Use these steps to control stage fright so it doesn't control you.

HPL Program with KL Advanced TMC 2008

The High Performance Leadership Program (HPL) is a program a Toastmaster needs to complete in order to earn an Advanced Leader Silver award. Kuala Lumpur Advanced Toastmasters Club hosted this January to June 2008 HPL in line with the club's intention to help its members and other Toastmasters become Distinguished Toastmasters.

Fisrt Session: 18th Jan 2008

The first session began at 7.50 pm after a sumptuous boxed dinner, so sumptuous some had second helpings, so boxed some took the boxes home :-)

40 Toastmasters from as far as Melaka turned up (so far I can't even frame her in this picture).

Oh by the way, the facilitator is Division W Governor, DTM Azmi Shahrin. I wonder what he takes to sustain his high energy level and voice volume for almost 2 hours ...

Look at his hand gestures; so fluid and dynamic (and leader-like) my camera managed a blur. Rest assured he was not shaking his right hand vulgarly (we were in a Toastmasters session ...)

Look at the concentration!

"Now listen up ... this program will make you better leaders in 6 months. Either that or it will make you grow tired of me in 6 months he he he ..."

Overheard: "... darn it, I didn't know I need to take a quiz to become a leader. Oh what the heck, it's just a quiz. Darn again, I need to add and divide some numbers too ... 1 + 1 is 2; now what is 2 divided by 2?"

In his workshop, "Using stories to get your message across", Dunstan Chan, DTM, mentioned that internet is an avenue for you to find stories you can use...

I have a treasure to share with you - not only there are the stories, but you can LISTEN TO as well as read them!

It is a free online collection of stories and poems in Mp3 (audiobook) format. You can:

* Download the files to your Mp3 player and listen on the go,
* Listen to the Mp3 files on your computer,
* View the text on a webpage and read along as you listen,
* Print out the stories and poems to make your own book.

There are four ways to get started:

1. Browse by Author. You can pick your stories by the author's last name.
2. Browse by Title. You can pick your stories by title.
3. Search Database. You can search the collection by title, author, keywords or reading level.
An abstract, citation, playing time, and word count are given for each of the passages. Many of the passages also have a related reading strategy identified. Each reading passage can also be downloaded as a PDF and printed for use as a read-along or as supplemental reading material for your classroom.

4. Launch iTunes. If you have iTunes software installed on your computer, you can download many of the selections directly into your iTunes library. The free iTunes application for either Macintosh or Windows computers may be downloaded directly from Apple, Inc.

22nd October, 2007 – it was a special day – Toastmasters International Day!

BANGSAR & KL ADVANCED TM Clubs celebrated the occasion with the support of Div W Council!

The evening was CHARGED with anticipation of fun. Muhendaran, ATMG, led the meeting with reading of the Toastmasters Promise. VPE, Shanmugam, CTM, on behalf of BANGSAR TM Club President, Ranjit Singh, ATMB, welcomed the attendees & surrendered the lectern to the TME, Lucky.

Immediately after the introduction of guests / Toastmasters, Satchit A.K. of KPMG, CC, made a TOAST to Toastmasters International, a befitting gesture. The presentation was part of Invocation as well as his FIRST advanced speech.

The table topics session was replaced with testing of skills! Bill Sim, ATMG, of KL Advanced, demonstrated his skills at instructing via the telephone (assumed). Following his instructions was Jessy of BANGSAR TM Club. She successfully tied the knot of her neck-tie! It was her FIRST experience!

Part of the FUN was also to test HOW FAST can one tie the Windsor Knot. Delbir Singh, Lee Chor Wah & Wan Siew Onn were the Top Three.

Maureen from BANGSAR delighted everyone with "From Lawyer To Therapist", her CL project #6. Veteran, Rema Paul, ATMS, delivered "Loving & Being Loved", a poem, as her project #2 from the Interpretive Reading Manual.

Before the general evaluation session, DVG(W) Azmi Shahrin, DTM, helped to complete the celebrations by cutting the cake.

The evaluators, Ivan Fong, Renganathan & Chandran gave their evaluations with their usual ‘honesty’. So did the grammarian, ah counter and the timer. In spite of the fun-atmosphere, everyone was very alert and executed the roles with enthusiasm and flair.

GE, Azmi Shahrin was full of praise for the function. He took advantage of his presence, and awarded a Soaring Eagle Gold Pin to VPM (BANGSAR), Sham Sunder for BANGSAR having increased the membership by 5 members.

All speech evaluators & participants in the tests of skills were presented with Ties, while the GE & the speakers were presented with other tokens of appreciation.

Ties / tokens were contribution of BANGSAR Charter Member, Baiju.

It was a fun-filled evening and certainly worth attending.

VPE, Lakhmichand, ATMB , on behalf KL ADVANCED TM Club President, Rohijas Md Sharif, ATMS, thanked the DVG, role-players and attendees for making it a lovely evening.
